Understanding South Carolina Adoption Law

In South Carolina, most adoptions of a non-family member take place within the foster care system, through a domestic adoption agency, or with an international adoption agency. With that said, every state has its own unique adoption laws. To successfully adopt in South Carolina, parents must do the following:

  • Obtain approval from the adoption professional you're working with in South Carolina
  • Meet the necessary requirements for the kind of adoption you're trying to secure
  • Undergo a home study to receive approval
  • Supply recent financial records to complete the process

It's important to note that by law, children over the age of 14 must approve of any adoption. However, anyone in South Carolina, regardless of their marital status, can adopt a child. Even individuals who have been convicted of a felony may be allowed to adopt, though they must undergo a court review with a social worker.

Before beginning the adoption process, it's important to determine if it's the right choice for your family. At Lauren Taylor Law, an adoption lawyer Near Me Taylors, SC is available to assist you in exploring your options and selecting the type of adoption that best meets your needs when you're prepared to commit to growing your family through adoption.

Legal Adoption Options in South Carolina

There are several types of legal adoption methods to consider in South Carolina. The following list covers a few of the most commonly used options in The Palmetto State. Reading this info can help you and your family decide which course of action is best. Popular adoption choices in South Carolina include the following:

Child Adoption Taylors, SC
  • Open adoptions
  • Closed adoptions
  • Relative adoptions
Open and Closed Adoptions

Open and Closed Adoptions in South Carolina

Adoptions in South Carolina can be either closed or open. In either case, the adoption file is sealed by the Court. In a closed adoption, the adoptive parents are not able to contact the birth parent. In fact, the child may never know who their birth parents are. In some cases, the adoptive parents may be able to access information about the birth mother for health purposes, while in other cases, there is no contact or information available. Closed adoptions are the more traditional adoptions. In contrast, open adoptions allow the adoptive parents and, potentially, the child to know who the birth mother is and may even stay in contact with each other. Adoption agencies may provide various levels of openness, which are dictated by the needs and desires of both the birth mother and adoptive parents.

Relative-Adoptions

Relative Adoptions in South Carolina

In situations where a person is unable to provide care for their child, a relative adoption (also called kinship adoption) may be necessary. This occurs when a family member of the child assumes legal responsibility for their care as a custodial guardian after the biological parents have had their parental rights terminated by court order. There are various reasons why this may occur, such as the parents being unable to provide a safe and stable environment for the child. Contributing factors may include:

  • Death
  • Jail or prison sentence
  • Mental health problems
  • Substance abuse

Understanding Home Studies for Adoptions in South Carolina

One area where your adoption attorney Near Me Taylors, SC will be incredibly helpful is if a home study is needed for you to adopt a child. All adoptions completed through direct placements or adoption agencies in South Carolina require home studies. These studies are conducted through a licensed home study provider. To be considered as adoptive parents in South Carolina, you must complete the home study process.

This evaluation is conducted before and after placement to assess your ability to provide a secure and loving home for your adopted child. The assessment involves at least two in-person interviews with prospective parents and individual interviews with every household member. The home study needs to be completed before any adoptive placement and must be renewed annually before the placement of an adopted child is finalized.

Adoption Legalities Taylors, SC

Home studies in South Carolina often investigate the following:

  • Maturity of adopted parents
  • The adoptive parent’s relationship and their ability to parent properly
  • The suitability of the home
  • Physical exams to determine the health of family members
  • Adoptive parents’ financial information
  • Adoptive parents’ ability to support the child financially
  • Convictions and arrests relating to prospective parents
  • References that attest to the character of the adoptive parents
  • Legal issues regarding abandonment, neglect, child abuse, etc.
  • Motivation for adopting children

It should be noted that home studies require the participation of every family member in the home. Items like background checks, home inspections, and social worker interviews are all on the table. This in-depth process can be nuanced and complicated, especially if you choose not to retain legal counsel for your adoption. The agency responsible for placing the child conducts a thorough investigation, which takes thirty days to complete. Once it's finished, the agency will notify the prospective adoptive parents in writing, either approving or denying their application. In the event of a denial, the agency will provide reasons for the decision.

Sip & Play Cafe in Taylors, SC might be the most parent-friendly spot this side of Greenville. In this article, you’ll find out what makes this indoor play cafe special, a full breakdown of the two play areas for kids ages 0-8, highlights from the specialty coffee menu, and everything you need to know about memberships and birthday party packages.

If you’ve ever wished you could actually enjoy a really good cup of coffee while your little kids played somewhere safe, clean, and close to home, Sip & Play Cafe in Taylors is going to be your new favorite place. The whole concept is simple and genius at once: great coffee for grown-ups, a dedicated indoor play space for kids ages 0-8, and an atmosphere that somehow manages to feel cozy and spacious at the same time. Located at 250 Mill St in Taylors, it’s a quick, easy trip from the Greenville, Greer, and Taylors areas, with free parking right there when you arrive.

The Story Behind Sip & Play

Sip & Play Cafe was started by Cory and Kristen Bruner, who have three small kids of their own and wanted exactly what most parents in this area have been missing: a cozy, safe, and fun place for young children to play indoors while parents actually get to relax with a good drink. Cory has a real passion for coffee, and it shows. The setup includes a beautiful espresso machine, a quality coffee grinder, and house-made syrups that take every drink up a notch. This isn’t an afterthought cafe tacked onto a play space. The coffee is genuinely excellent.

The space itself is bright with lots of natural light, comfortable chairs and sofas, and a thoughtful layout that makes it easy to keep an eye on your kids from just about anywhere in the cafe. The design touches are beautiful, too. Exposed brick walls give the space real character, and a mural by local artist Brushed Magnolia adds a warmth that makes it feel welcoming rather than generic.

Two Play Areas Built for Different Ages

One of the many things Cory and Kristen got exactly right are the play space setups. Rather than one big free-for-all zone, Sip & Play has two dedicated play areas separated by waist-high walls, so parents can easily watch both spaces from the cafe seating area. This matters a lot when you have a toddler and an older sibling, because each kid gets a space that’s actually designed for them.

The 0-2 space is designed specifically for babies, crawlers, and early walkers. You’ll find a little swing, a play set sized for small bodies, and wall toys that keep little ones busy and engaged. It’s soft and appropriately contained, so you can actually set down your latte for a minute without worrying.

The older kids’ space is a full step up. There are two climbing and slide sets complete with monkey bars, imagination play stations, and sit-on toys that keep kids moving and playing together. It’s active without being overwhelming, and the waist-high dividers mean parents can see into both spaces without having to chase anyone down.

There’s also a book nook and a selection of toys for older kids that has books and games. The enclosed play spaces for for kids ages 8 and younger.

The Cafe: Seriously Good Coffee (and Kid-Friendly Drinks Too)

I’d honestly spend all day in the cafe area. The exposed brick walls, comfortable seating, and gorgeous original floors make it feel like a real destination rather than just a waiting room while the kids play. The whole atmosphere is cozy and spacious without ever feeling overwhelming.

The coffee menu includes seasonal drinks alongside the regulars, all made with care. A few standouts worth trying:

And if your little one wants something too, there’s a whole kids’ drinks section: a Kids Hot Chocolate, a Babyccino, chocolate milk, and juice. The Babyccino is steamed milk with your choice of toppings (whipped cream, cinnamon powder, chocolate or caramel drizzle, coarse sugar). Kids feel like they’re getting the full cafe experience, which they absolutely love.

For food, you’ll find pastries, light bites, and quick breakfast options. Snacks are available too, and local baked goods will likely be rotating in as well. Cory and Kristen even make their own syrups for the coffee!

Memberships: Play More, Save More

If Sip & Play is going to be a regular stop (and honestly, it probably will be), the membership options make a lot of sense. Each membership includes 10 play sessions per month plus one free friend visit per month. Sessions reset monthly and don’t roll over, so the goal is to use them.

Right now Sip & Play is offering Founding Member rates, which lock in a lower price as long as your membership stays active. Here’s how the plans break down:

All memberships include 10 play sessions per month + one free friend visit per month. Reservations are subject to availability.

Birthday Parties and Private Events

Yes, you can host a birthday party at Sip & Play Cafe, and yes, you can rent out the entire space. The party area is huge and flexible, so you can really make it your own. Birthday party packages are available through the website, and members get discounts ($25-$35 off depending on your plan).

Family events are also on the calendar, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the Sip & Play events page for upcoming activities.

Tip: Before your first visit, sign a waiver on the Sip & Play website to save time when you arrive. Reservations are recommended since play sessions are subject to availability.

Honest Mom Review

The new Sip & Play space is ideal for parents of small kids. As parents of littles themselves, Cory and Kristen have taken into consideration so many aspects of what parents really want and need, and made it happen. There’s a private nursing space, clean bathrooms, and plenty of space to relax, enjoy coffee, and let your kids play.

The location is also ideal. There is nothing like Sip & Play anywhere in this area of town, and Cory and Kristen have really tried to create a central spot where families can come again and again with their kids. Free parking, easy to get to, and right in Taylors — it’s the kind of place this part of the Upstate has genuinely needed.

TAYLORS, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A fire tore through a building at the Halcyon apartment complex along Eastern Meadow Street, off Boiling Springs Road. The fire happened Friday afternoon, leaving at least eight families without a home.

The Boiling Springs Fire District said crews got the call around 2 p.m. arrived on scene within three minutes. Multiple agencies responded to the blaze.

No injuries reported

The fire district confirmed no injuries resulted from the incident.

“As of right now we’re at a total of zero injuries for the incident,” a fire district official said.

A woman told a reporter she called 911 after seeing flames from her balcony and rushed to check on her elderly neighbor. The fire district said everyone got out safely.

Cause under investigation

Drone footage showed the roof of the affected unit charred and caved in. Cleanup crews were on scene placing caution tape around the area.

Neighbors said an air conditioning unit had been serviced in the area earlier in the day. Firefighters were seen digging near a unit, and the fire district said it believes the fire started on the outside of the building.

Captain Chris Camacho of the Boiling Springs Fire District said the investigation remains open to all possibilities.

“We always do our due diligence and investigate all potential causes equally,” Camacho said.

Camacho also described the response to the blaze.

“It was a standard apartment fire. We made an aggressive attack and it worked out well,” he said.

Cleanup efforts were underway as of Friday evening.
