Greenville is a beautiful city to walk around in. Whether you take in some shopping on a stroll down main street, marvel at the natural beauty of Falls Park, or spend the day hiking through our nearby state parks, there are plenty of places throughout the Upstate to get out and enjoy this favorite form of recreation. Walking is good for both your physical and mental health, and it eases the strain put on the environment by car emissions. Despite the many benefits and the enjoyment that comes from walking, however, there are some dangers all pedestrians need to be aware of. The state of South Carolina in general has received the unfortunate distinction of having a high rate of pedestrian accidents. Injuries due to pedestrian accidents are often severe and life threatening. These accidents are a danger we all need to be aware of, and by following pedestrian laws and practicing some safety tips, you can make sure you and your loved ones are protected against these types of accidents.

Pedestrian Accidents In South Carolina

In Greenville and throughout the Upstate, we’re fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most dangerous places, at least for pedestrians. A USA Today feature story last summer on the 10 most dangerous states for pedestrians listed South Carolina as number three. Based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Palmetto State has one of the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the nation. The problem isn’t just a local one; according to the NHTSA, nationwide a pedestrian is injured almost every 8 minutes and pedestrian deaths account for approximately 14% of all traffic-related fatalities.

Preventing Pedestrian Accidents

In response to the alarming statistics regarding dangers to pedestrians, many states have responded with legally enforced pedestrian and crosswalk laws, designed to prevent accidents and injuries. According to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), motorists must yield to pedestrians at intersections and at marked crosswalks. To ensure their own safety, the SCDMV recommends the following tips for pedestrian safety :

  • Avoid walking behind parked cars.
  • Cross only at intersections and designated crosswalks.
  • Don’t assume a driver sees you or is going to stop. Try to make eye contact to confirm the driver sees you.
  • Avoid overconsumption of alcohol when walking. You want to be able to stay focused on what is going on around you.
  • Be careful walking at night. Wear brightly colored clothing to increase your visibility to drivers.

Drivers have a responsibility for pedestrians’ safety also.  A driver should always go slowly and be prepared to stop anywhere there are large groups of pedestrians, and be prepared to use their horn to warn pedestrians of imminent dangers.
