CHARLESTON — A unique event planned for Credit One Stadium in September just got a heavyweight bout added to the card.
The South Carolina women's basketball team will join a previously planned men's exhibition basketball showcase, the LinkU Invitational, on Sept. 27, sources first told The Post and Courier on Wednesday. LinkU issued a release on Thursday.
“Every season we are looking to work with groups committed to growing women’s basketball, and we’ve found them in this event,” South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said in a statement. “A unique venue for basketball and VIP experience packages that provide opportunities to enjoy the best that Charleston has to offer, what more could fans ask for? For our Charleston FAMS, it will be great to visit them for a game to repay them for all their drives to Columbia throughout the season.”
The Gamecocks will take on College of Charleston in the last game of the day, set to begin in late afternoon after a men's doubleheader.
Virginia and Vanderbilt will tip off at 1 p.m. while College of Charleston and The Citadel will follow. USC and CofC will cap the day. All games will be played on an outdoor court, built atop the stadium's usual tennis courts.
It's been more than two decades since the Gamecock women have played a game in Charleston, the last coming in a 2004 win against the Cougars. That was a matchup of Cougars coach Nancy Wilson going against USC, which she led to five NCAA Tournament appearances.
The weekend begins on Sept. 25 with a Chalk Talk, bringing together participating teams, partners and invited guests. It will feature coaches and players, offering fans an inside look at the teams and matchups before Sunday’s games.
On Sept. 26, with college football in full swing, Uptown Social will host watch parties for the participating schools, giving fans a place to cheer on their teams and connect with fellow supporters throughout the day. The Gamecocks are at Alabama that day while The Citadel hosts Chattanooga.
On Sunday, before the opening tip, Credit One Stadium will transform into a pregame destination with curated food and beverage offerings, family-friendly entertainment and a gameday atmosphere surrounding all three matchups.
"From the beginning, our goal was to create more than a basketball event. We wanted to build a weekend that celebrates college basketball and gives fans experiences they can't find anywhere else," said Austin Elrod, Founder & CEO of The LinkU, in a statement. "With Chalk Talk on Friday night and three incredible games on Sunday, this has become a true destination weekend for fans and student-athletes alike."

The Gamecocks are expected to be ranked No. 1 in the first Associated Press Top 25 of the season. USC has won the past five SEC regular-season championships and advanced to six straight Final Fours, and the last three national championship games.
The exhibition may be one of the few chances USC fans receive to see their favorite team in person early in the season. Staley has lined up an extremely aggressive non-conference slate with almost every game at a neutral site or on the road.
The Gamecocks begin the season on Nov. 2 against Maryland in Paris.
The Cougars are coming off one of their best seasons in program history.
CofC went 27-6 during the 2025-26 season, winning the Coastal Athletic Association’s regular season and tournament titles.

Uptown Cheapskate is expanding to 1291 Folly Road and announced its first day of buying consignments is Oct. 6. The store sells secondhand men’s and women’s brand-name clothing, accessories and shoes.
The store also buys items from people if they’re ready to wear, specified as freshly laundered, free of stains, holes or strong odors, and in gently used condition.
“Basically, if you’d lend it to a friend, you’re on the right track,” a Facebook post from the store said.
The James Island shop will be the fifth Uptown Cheapskate in South Carolina and the second in the Lowcountry. The Mount Pleasant store reopened in March 2025 after an 18-month hiatus. There’s also one location in Clemson, Easley and Greenville.
The first 100 people who sell consigned items to the store will receive a $5 store credit, according to the Uptown Cheapskate post.
Drop-off hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. Sundays.
Light it up
Despite the warm weather, fall always seems to conjure up cozy vibes with blankets, books and candles.
For fans of the latter, you’re in luck; Kindle & Bloom Candle Studio has opened in Summerville.
Hand-poured in Summerville, the candles use 100 percent soy wax, cotton wicks and a custom-blended fragrance. Scents are a mix of signature everyday collections, such as the citrus and linen-scented Sea Glass and Indigo Bloom that combines bergamot with golden amber and soft patchouli.

Hello from Hanahan
A boutique with roots in downtown Charleston is expanding to Hanahan.
The owners of Pineapple House Boutique broke ground on their second location Sept. 15. The new spot will be one of the founding businesses of Blackwells Corner, a new mixed-use development, according to the store’s Facebook post.
Blackwells Corner will be Hanahan’s first town center and mix dining, retail, fitness studios, salons and office space across roughly 40,000 square feet.
Pineapple House Boutique “merges the worlds of retail and hospitality” and is inspired by its sister business, Historic Charleston Bed & Breakfast Reservations and Rentals, according to its website. The store sells items made by local artisans, including ornaments, jewelry and clothing.
Pineapple House’s downtown Charleston location on Pinckney Street is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
There is no timeline yet on when the Hanahan store will open.
A taste of home
Kraft & Crust is the newest eatery to land on Daniel Island.
The boutique bakery specializes in sourdough made fresh daily and by the local owner.
Olga Kraft founded the bakery after she moved from Germany to the U.S. in 2023, saying the one thing she and her family truly missed was “fresh, honest bread.”
“Bread has always been part of our everyday life. The kind of bread with a crisp crust, real flavor, and simple ingredients. The kind of bread you bring to the table and everyone reaches for,” Kraft said on her website.
The baker is self-taught, having purchased a sourdough starter kit, taking various classes and trying again and again to create the perfect loaf.
Kraft & Crust offers daily breads that include a classic wheat sourdough, a rustic rye sourdough and a German pretzel stick known as a “Laugenstange.”
The menu offers weekly specials, such as rotating flavors like jalapeno cheddar, cinnamon and raisin, lemon and berry, and tomato and basil bread.
Kraft & Crust is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 250 Seven Farms Drive.

Rainfall breaks 130-year-old record in downtown Charleston. And it’s still coming.
The National Weather Service recorded 3.64 inches of rain on Oct. 4, breaking the previous daily rainfall record of 2.51 inches set Oct. 4, 1893. Some areas received more than 5 or 6 inches over a 12-hour period, prompting a region-wide flash flood alert around 8 p.m. that warned of dangerous and life-threatening conditions. The flood warning lifted after 1 a.m. on Oct. 5, and all main roads reopened ahead of the morning traffic rush, though some smaller side streets remained closed.
Popular Charleston sushi chain sues new restaurant over its allegedly similar name
Locals Sushi & Sports Pub, which has three locations in Charleston County, filed a lawsuit against Moncks Corner restaurant Rollin Local on Sept. 14, alleging unfair and deceptive trade practices. The suit claims Rollin Local copied menu items, hired former employees with knowledge of Locals' recipes, and used a confusingly similar name to trade on the established chain's goodwill. Locals Sushi & Sports Pub, in operation since 2009, sent a cease-and-desist letter in May, which Rollin Local refused. Trial is scheduled to begin April 12, 2027.
Why were those 5 James Island homes on Harborview Road torn down? The water utility did it.
Charleston Water System demolished five homes on Harbor View Circle this year because the utility determined it would be less expensive to tear them down than maintain them, citing issues like asbestos and mold. The homes were located on a small marsh island adjacent to the Plum Island sewage treatment plant, where CWS has been acquiring for decades in anticipation of future infrastructure expansion. While no immediate plans exist for the site, CWS spokesperson Michael Saia said eventually all homes on the island will need to be demolished.
A $10K strip of grass helps students outside of Charleston County get into CCSD schools — legally
A 12-foot-wide vacant parcel at Romney Street and Athens Court is listed for $10,000 with its primary selling point being "school qualifying purposes." An obscure 1962 South Carolina law allows students to attend school in any district if they own property there with a tax-assessed value of $300 or more, and families have been purchasing cheap parcels to meet this requirement. For the 2026-27 school year, 35 students residing outside the district used this property law to attend Charleston County schools, generating $431,000 in revenue for the district.
Bay Street Biergarten to open 2nd location in West Ashley
Bay Street Biergarten, a German- and Southern-influenced restaurant operating since 2013, will open a second location in West Ashley in spring 2027. The new location will be larger than the flagship downtown restaurant at 549 East Bay St. and will feature expanded outdoor space and more televisions.
