GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Ride 3 roadway improvements are underway in Garden City and Murrells Inlet.

If you're traveling on Highway 17 Business in this area, you'll see lots of orange traffic cones, which are part of roadwork improvements at four major intersections:

The purpose is to enhance safety and traffic flow.

"I think if you've driven through there, you realize, a, it's very busy, there's some kind of geometry issues with those intersections. They're not exactly easy to navigate," Anna Barnhill, Horry County ride assistant program director, said.

"So what we would like to do is enhance those intersections, improve the geometry of the intersections, improve the flow through that area and make it safer for drivers and pedestrians."

The Highway 17 Business intersection improvements project is part of Ride 3 and has been in the works since 2017.

Crews are now clearing trees and relocating utility lines. In a few months, you'll see the actual roadwork start to happen with drainage improvements and eventually the pavement.

The upgrades will add more space for cars to line up in turn lanes, add sight lines for easier navigation through places like the Highway 17 Business split and improve the geometry particularly at Mount Gilead and Inlet Square Drive by merging those two sets of traffic signals into one intersection.

"So right now where Mount Gilead, you know, kind of exits in a weird spot that that is actually going to be moved. So that that intersection is kind of one, intersection, like you're used to seeing. It's not going to be kind of the double light, which is a little bit confusing now," Barnhill said.

The project will also add and upgrade shared use paths to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Construction is anticipated to be done towards the end of 2028.

"You're going to see the cones, you're going to see things happening, but a lot of it's going to be happening at night. So all we ask is that you just be very safe driving through there and be aware that geometry may change. There may be, you know, a lane may shift a little bit during construction. But, we are trying to maximize the ease with which you can drive through the construction area," Barnhill said.

GARDEN CITY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County is partnering with local organizations on a five-phase streetscape project designed to reduce flooding and improve infrastructure in Garden City.

Knee-deep water flooding streets, homes and businesses is common during storms or high king tides in Garden City, according to community members.

The project, currently in the permitting phase, addresses drainage issues, reduces the impact of high tides and improves water quality. It also moves overhead utilities underground and adds sidewalks to the community.

Phase one covers Waccamaw Drive from the Georgetown County line to Magnolia Avenue. It also includes Atlantic Avenue from Waccamaw Drive to the marsh.

Construction workers Sam Moore and Corey Mote described problems caused by poor drainage that they repair throughout the year.

“More foundation, so where the water comes in the sand settles and gets loose, so you have a post that just sinks in,” Mote said. “And some floors will rot, people will fall through the floors, we’ll have to fix that, and then mold is a big issue, because water gets into the dry wall and sheet rock.”

Moore said the community deserves better infrastructure.

“If we can get the problem fixed, let’s get the problem fixed,” he said.

Once finished, residents and visitors will see brighter street lights, more parking, new crosswalks at major intersections and fresh asphalt on Waccamaw Drive.

Consultants for Santee Cooper and Horry County are reaching out to homeowners and businesses for easements for the project along South Waccamaw Drive, South Dogwood Drive, Atlantic Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, Azalea Avenue and Holly Avenue.

After the southern part of Waccamaw Drive is completed, phase two begins from Magnolia Avenue to Cypress Avenue.

Eventually, similar improvements will stretch north to Melody Lane.

A county spokesperson said they are unsure when the entire project will be complete since it is only in the first phase.
