Tom Knotts can break one of John McKissick’s records this season if Dutch Fork football wins its fifth-straight state championship.
But the Dutch Fork coach knows he won’t come close to another mark held by the former Summerville coach and high school football national all-time wins leader: Knotts has no plans to coach as long as McKissick.
McKissick was 88 years old and coached for 63 years when he stepped down from leading the Green Wave in 2015.
“I won’t make 80,” Knotts said July 30 on the first official day of preseason practice.
So when might Knotts call it a career? That’s still up in the air, he says.
“I don’t know what else I would do. I don’t golf, I don’t hunt, I don’t fish. This is my life."
The 70-year-old Knotts is entering his 43rd season as head coach, which also includes stops at Harding, West Charlotte and Independence high schools in North Carolina. He became Dutch Fork’s second coach in school history when he replaced Bill Kimrey before the 2010 season.
Knotts has built the Silver Foxes into a dynasty and nationally-regarded program. Dutch Fork won its 10th title of his tenure last season when they defeated Summerville for a second straight year.
The 10 titles in South Carolina tied him with McKissick and Willie Varner for most as a high school football coach in the state. No. 11 would cement Knotts at No. 1 in Palmetto State history.
An 11th title also would tie Dutch Fork for fourth-most in S.C. history with Byrnes High. Knotts has won 17 state championships overall including his time in North Carolina.
The Silver Foxes can tie their own state record of five championships in a row if they win this year.
“All my thoughts and energy are towards my family and towards football,” said Knotts, who has 486 career wins according to Dutch Fork records. “I feel healthy and strong. I don’t know what else I would do. I enjoy it for the most part. There are some things I don’t like, such as the advent of social media creeping into football and money. But it is what it is.
“I am nearing the end, but not sure when it will be.”
This year might appear to be a good time to go out, if Knotts chooses. His son Jaxon is a senior and the Silver Foxes’ starting quarterback for the second straight year. Jaxon racked up more than 2,800 total yards and 28 touchdowns last season.
Jaxon plans to graduate in December and be an early enrollee in college to play football. And no, he isn’t sure either when his dad will retire from coaching.
Tom Knotts stays in good shape, and rides his bike or walks and lifts weights regularly. He had a health scare five years ago before a game against Byrnes.
Knotts spent time in the hospital in 2021 but was released mid-week. He told The State after the game he had an ablation and atrial flutter, which is a type of abnormal heart rhythm.
Medical workers had to shock his heart back into rhythm, Knotts said, and he was back on the sidelines for the 56-25 win over the Rebels, the program’s 52nd straight at the time.
“I feel good now,” Knotts said. “I pride myself on being in good shape. It is hard to stay on top of your game and do the mental part, the film work and all the organization it takes for three teams” — varsity, junior varsity and a freshman team.
Knotts still has the passion and energy to coach. That much was evident from watching him take the team through drills in the school’s first official 2026 practice. He spent time away with family the weekend prior but said he couldn’t wait for practice to start.
The Silver Foxes are loaded with talent once again, including several transfers from the area and from out of state. Because of that, Knotts said he had to spend more time in the spring and over the summer with installation of the playbook and getting players to buy into his method of doing things.
But that kind of preparation is what he enjoys the most and will continue to treasure until the day comes when he decides to retire.
“I like Monday through Thursday. I like the practice part and putting it together,” Knotts said. “Seeing a bunch of guys working, moving them in and out and teaching them how to play football like they are supposed to.”

Reloaded on Both Sides of the Ball
It starts with senior quarterback Jaxon Knotts, the coach's son. Knotts threw for 2,293 yards and 19 touchdowns with 4 interceptions. A dual threat, Knotts ran for 536 yards and 9 touchdowns. Running backs Kyle Henry and Quinton Wilson, who combined for 23 touchdowns, are back.
The top receivers graduated but they are being replaced by elite prospects Corey Miller and Maleek Miller, who both transferred from Irmo. Corey Miller, a rising sophomore, already has 36 college offers. Maleek Miller, a senior who has 18 offers, accounted for 20 touchdowns in 2025.
Heading up the offensive line is 6-foot-5, 300-pound A.C, Flora transfer Jay McGowan, who has racked up 15 college offers.
The defense is led by 6-foot-4, 240-pound edge Peyton Bishop, an A.C. Flora transfer who has 24 college offers, and junior free safety Kareem Dupree, who had five interceptions in 2025.
Another Challenging Road Ahead
For the last two seasons, Dutch Fork has won the South Carolina High School League 5-A Division I state title. The latest SCHSL realignment eliminated the 5A split, meaning Dutch Fork will once again face the state's top competition in a single classification.
Dutch Fork will once again a nine-game regular season schedule that notably excludes crosstown rival Irmo.. They won't face each other in the postseason either because Irmo is now a 4-A school.
The Silver Foxes are grouped in a region with Chapin, Lexington, River Bluff and White Knoll. Irmo dropped out with the move to 4-A.
Last year, Dutch Fork shut out Chapin 50-0, Lexington 49-0 and River Bluff 37-0. Their toughest competition came from White Knoll. Dutch Fork erased a 24-20 deficit with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a 41-24 win. Dutch Fork owns a combined 51-2 all-time record against those four region opponents, with most of the victories coming by comfortable margins.
Dutch Fork was 12-1 last season, with the lone defeat coming in a 24-20 decision to Oceanside Collegiate Academy, which also is on a run of three straight state titles.
The non-region opponents are Ridge View, Spartanburg, Sumter, and Gray Collegiate Academy. Ridge and Spartanburg, the first two games of the season, are on the road. Ridge View played Dutch Fork to a 28-21 game last year. The Silver Foxes dominated Spartanburg and Gray Collegiate. Sumter is a new opponent.
