At Lauren Taylor Law, our practice is dedicated to providing comprehensive legal services in South Carolina Estate Law, encompassing the following areas:
When you hear the word "estate," what comes to mind? Many people think of a sprawling, multi-story mansion on the water. However, you don't have to be uber-wealthy to have an estate. Chances are you already have one. An estate is comprised of all the assets a person owns, such as:
And that, in a nutshell, is what estate planning is all about - working with an estate planning attorney in Taylors, SC, to create a framework that recognizes the people or organizations who should benefit from your assets. Though it may require some work and introspection up front, planning your estate now will make life easier for you and your loved ones down the line.
However, great estate plans usually cover more than fiscal assets. Your estate plan should also include:
Contrary to what others may tell you, estate planning isn't just reserved for older people approaching retirement. Estate planning is a savvy and responsible way to plan ahead because we never know when it could be our time to go.
At Lauren Taylor Law, our estate attorneys craft personalized wills while providing guidance on many estate planning topics. Some of the most common estate planning services we offer include:
Wills are a crucial legal document and the primary building block of professional estate planning. They are legal declarations that you use to name one or more people to administer your estate. Wills also dictate provisions for how your wealth is distributed after death. Hiring an estate planning attorney in Taylors, SC, ensures you get the outcomes both you and your loved ones prefer.
Sometimes, you need authorized representation to help with your affairs. Having a power of attorney lets you choose a person to act on your behalf or represent you in private or legal matters. It should be noted that while you have access to standard power of attorneys, they can only fulfill basic planning needs. Our team can help you draft a more comprehensive document addressing all your administrative needs.
Also referred to as an advanced directive, your living will states your medical end-of-life wishes if you cannot communicate. This sensitive document guides your family members and doctors through difficult situations, like whether you should be resuscitated after a car crash.
In addition to the estate planning services above, we also specialize in:
Estate planning can be a complex process, but drafting a well-rounded plan now will make a big difference to your beneficiaries in the future. To give you a better understanding of estate law in South Carolina, keep these basic concepts and strategies in mind.
If there were one strategy that every estate attorney agrees about, it would be maximizing what you plan to leave behind. Taking time to think through what you'll be leaving and to whom you'll be leaving it to is crucial in estate planning. It's important to note, however, that your plans may change depending on what type of asset you're leaving behind, its worth, your age, and many other factors. With an estate planning lawyer in Taylors, SC, by your side, you'll learn about the pros and cons of your choices while minimizing court fees and taxes.
The person you choose as the executor of your will plays a big part in your affairs. Your executor is responsible for finalizing estate settlements while upholding the terms of your will. Such a demanding role requires a unique person, and choosing that person is a decision you should take seriously. Your executor should be adept at managing money and should be patient in stressful times because they're responsible for the following:
To ensure your executor upholds your instructions and wishes, ask that they use an estate planning attorney in Taylors, SC, for help. Having a trustworthy, experienced lawyer on your side will help ensure your estate is distributed accurately and according to South Carolina law.
As one of the most trusted estate planning law offices in South Carolina, we encounter clients all the time who question whether having a will is really necessary. They think that because their will is small or modest, having one is a waste of money. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
Why? Think about what would happen if you didn't have a will. When you pass away without a will, you're dying "intestate." In this scenario, intestate succession laws in South Carolina determine where your assets go. You do not get to choose.
If you have a cherished family heirloom that you want to pass to your niece or a valuable car you want your brother to have, you may be out of luck without a will in place. Intestate succession laws in South Carolina dictate who gets what in your family. If you don't want the State to decide who will inherit your assets, forming a will with the help of an estate planning lawyer in Taylors, SC, is necessary.
Another reason to have a will is to help care for and protect your family if you pass away suddenly. This is true even if you consider yourself to be "too young" to have a will. If you're the parent of a minor and you die intestate, they will inherit your estate according to South Carolina law. However, this often means your child owns an interest in your home. That opens them up to intrusion from probate court. It also means a Guardian Ad Litem will be involved in your affairs to question the choices of your surviving family members, whether you like it or not.
By having a last will and testament in place, you have the chance to nominate a guardian for your child in the event that you pass.
You've probably seen ads for easy or "fill-in-the-blank" legal forms across the internet, promising low costs and easy will creation. Unfortunately, using these boilerplate forms is highly risky and may end up hurting your loved ones more than helping them. That's because when an estate planning attorney in Taylors, SC, is not present to prepare your will, you may receive a document that is inadequate, ambiguous, or even invalid by law.
At Lauren Taylor Law, we have found many issues with "DIY" wills, including the following:
Conflicting Verbiage: When using a "DIY" will, you've got to make choices on the form that often conflict, which can lead to ambiguity in your will.
Ambiguous Language: The language found within "fill-in-the-blank" wills typically includes less-than-clear verbiage. When a judge is unable to decipher the instructions in your will, it can lead to long, costly probate problems.
Outdated Info: South Carolina laws change often. Changes in the law can have a dramatic effect on the terms of your will, especially because online forms are often outdated from the very beginning.
Not Specific to South Carolina: As is the case with any state, local laws must be taken into account when creating your will, because state law governs several facets of estate planning. Many "DIY" wills are thrown out in probate court because they are generic and not specific to South Carolina estate laws.
Insufficient Instructions: Many people using boilerplate legal documents are uninformed about estate and probate laws. When it comes to preparing legal documents like wills, there is no substitute for the guidance you receive from a lawyer. Only a certified lawyer has the knowledge and experience to provide you with reliable advice and instructions. The instructions included with "DIY" wills lack true advice from a lawyer, rendering them nearly useless.
In life, there are no guarantees as to how long we'll be around to enjoy time with our families. That's why planning your estate is so important: to provide for those who mean the most to you. As your estate planning attorneys, our job is to ensure your family and assets are protected under South Carolina law. We take that job very seriously.
If you're looking for experienced, professional help drafting your last will and testament - one that truly reflects your wishes - look no further than Lauren Taylor Law. Our team is dedicated to the best interests of you and your family and is committed to providing sound legal advice, no matter the value of your estate.

A handful of South Carolina Starbucks locations are on the closure list as the Seattle-based coffee giant shrinks its market footprint once more.
Starbucks announced the closure of 250 locations across the United States on Thursday, Sept. 24. Chief Operating Officer Mike Gram said the coffee chain closes locations each year, and that the closures are about 1% of Starbucks' more than 18,000 North American coffee shops.
Gram noted in his public letter to employees that the stores chosen to close were due to underperformance, "despite the hard work and commitment of all of you."
"We’re making this decision for a simple reason: We want every Starbucks coffeehouse to be a place customers love, and partners are proud to work," Grams wrote in his letter.
The company has not released a full list of closures, and reports have slowly emerged naming locations that have already closed. The list includes at least four stores in South Carolina, including two in the Upstate region.
Shop sales in tech, home, fashion, beauty & more curated by our editors. All 250 stores are expected to shutter before the end of the 2026 fiscal year. Many have already closed their doors, leaving notes on the doors and marking their locations as permanently closed on Google. The latest numbers show at least 225 closures confirmed across North America, according to Fast Company, which has been reporting on industry closings.
The closures are part of the coffee chain's "Back to Starbucks" strategy. The strategy was first announced in 2024 with the promise to make locations "feel like Starbucks again."
This is the second round of closures at the company since the strategy was implemented.
As of Sept. 28, four South Carolina Starbucks locations have shuttered, including two in the Upstate area:

Sip & Play Cafe in Taylors, SC might be the most parent-friendly spot this side of Greenville. In this article, you’ll find out what makes this indoor play cafe special, a full breakdown of the two play areas for kids ages 0-8, highlights from the specialty coffee menu, and everything you need to know about memberships and birthday party packages.
If you’ve ever wished you could actually enjoy a really good cup of coffee while your little kids played somewhere safe, clean, and close to home, Sip & Play Cafe in Taylors is going to be your new favorite place. The whole concept is simple and genius at once: great coffee for grown-ups, a dedicated indoor play space for kids ages 0-8, and an atmosphere that somehow manages to feel cozy and spacious at the same time. Located at 250 Mill St in Taylors, it’s a quick, easy trip from the Greenville, Greer, and Taylors areas, with free parking right there when you arrive.
Sip & Play Cafe was started by Cory and Kristen Bruner, who have three small kids of their own and wanted exactly what most parents in this area have been missing: a cozy, safe, and fun place for young children to play indoors while parents actually get to relax with a good drink. Cory has a real passion for coffee, and it shows. The setup includes a beautiful espresso machine, a quality coffee grinder, and house-made syrups that take every drink up a notch. This isn’t an afterthought cafe tacked onto a play space. The coffee is genuinely excellent.
The space itself is bright with lots of natural light, comfortable chairs and sofas, and a thoughtful layout that makes it easy to keep an eye on your kids from just about anywhere in the cafe. The design touches are beautiful, too. Exposed brick walls give the space real character, and a mural by local artist Brushed Magnolia adds a warmth that makes it feel welcoming rather than generic.
One of the many things Cory and Kristen got exactly right are the play space setups. Rather than one big free-for-all zone, Sip & Play has two dedicated play areas separated by waist-high walls, so parents can easily watch both spaces from the cafe seating area. This matters a lot when you have a toddler and an older sibling, because each kid gets a space that’s actually designed for them.
The 0-2 space is designed specifically for babies, crawlers, and early walkers. You’ll find a little swing, a play set sized for small bodies, and wall toys that keep little ones busy and engaged. It’s soft and appropriately contained, so you can actually set down your latte for a minute without worrying.
The older kids’ space is a full step up. There are two climbing and slide sets complete with monkey bars, imagination play stations, and sit-on toys that keep kids moving and playing together. It’s active without being overwhelming, and the waist-high dividers mean parents can see into both spaces without having to chase anyone down.
There’s also a book nook and a selection of toys for older kids that has books and games. The enclosed play spaces for for kids ages 8 and younger.
I’d honestly spend all day in the cafe area. The exposed brick walls, comfortable seating, and gorgeous original floors make it feel like a real destination rather than just a waiting room while the kids play. The whole atmosphere is cozy and spacious without ever feeling overwhelming.
The coffee menu includes seasonal drinks alongside the regulars, all made with care. A few standouts worth trying:
And if your little one wants something too, there’s a whole kids’ drinks section: a Kids Hot Chocolate, a Babyccino, chocolate milk, and juice. The Babyccino is steamed milk with your choice of toppings (whipped cream, cinnamon powder, chocolate or caramel drizzle, coarse sugar). Kids feel like they’re getting the full cafe experience, which they absolutely love.
For food, you’ll find pastries, light bites, and quick breakfast options. Snacks are available too, and local baked goods will likely be rotating in as well. Cory and Kristen even make their own syrups for the coffee!
If Sip & Play is going to be a regular stop (and honestly, it probably will be), the membership options make a lot of sense. Each membership includes 10 play sessions per month plus one free friend visit per month. Sessions reset monthly and don’t roll over, so the goal is to use them.
Right now Sip & Play is offering Founding Member rates, which lock in a lower price as long as your membership stays active. Here’s how the plans break down:
All memberships include 10 play sessions per month + one free friend visit per month. Reservations are subject to availability.
Yes, you can host a birthday party at Sip & Play Cafe, and yes, you can rent out the entire space. The party area is huge and flexible, so you can really make it your own. Birthday party packages are available through the website, and members get discounts ($25-$35 off depending on your plan).
Family events are also on the calendar, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the Sip & Play events page for upcoming activities.
Tip: Before your first visit, sign a waiver on the Sip & Play website to save time when you arrive. Reservations are recommended since play sessions are subject to availability.
The new Sip & Play space is ideal for parents of small kids. As parents of littles themselves, Cory and Kristen have taken into consideration so many aspects of what parents really want and need, and made it happen. There’s a private nursing space, clean bathrooms, and plenty of space to relax, enjoy coffee, and let your kids play.
The location is also ideal. There is nothing like Sip & Play anywhere in this area of town, and Cory and Kristen have really tried to create a central spot where families can come again and again with their kids. Free parking, easy to get to, and right in Taylors — it’s the kind of place this part of the Upstate has genuinely needed.
Sip & Play Cafe is located at 250 Mill St in Taylors, SC 29687, about 20 minutes from downtown Greenville. Free parking is available on-site. You can book a play session, sign your waiver, and explore membership options at sipandplaycafetaylors.com. You can also reach them by phone at (864) 666-2478 or by email at sipandplaycafeTaylors@gmail.com.
Hours: As of August 2026, they are open Monday-Friday 10 am – 4 pm and Saturday from 9 am – Noon
Sip & Play Cafe is designed for kids ages 0-8. There are two separate play areas: a soft play space for babies and toddlers ages 0-2, and a climbing and imagination play area for kids ages 3-8.
Memberships are available starting at $39/month (Founding Member rate) and include 10 play sessions per month. Drop-in options start at $13/child. Check the Sip & Play website for current booking options.
Yes! Sip & Play Cafe offers birthday party packages, and you can even rent the entire venue for a private party. The party space is large and flexible. Members receive $25-$35 off birthday party packages depending on their membership tier.
Yes, genuinely. Owner Cory Bruner has a real passion for coffee. The cafe uses quality espresso equipment, a dedicated coffee grinder, and house-made syrups. Seasonal drinks rotate in throughout the year.
Sip & Play Cafe is located at 250 Mill St, Taylors, about 20 minutes from downtown Greenville. Free parking is available on-site.
Play sessions are subject to availability, so booking ahead through the Sip & Play website is recommended. You can also sign your waiver online before arriving to save time at the door.

TAYLORS, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A fire tore through a building at the Halcyon apartment complex along Eastern Meadow Street, off Boiling Springs Road. The fire happened Friday afternoon, leaving at least eight families without a home.
The Boiling Springs Fire District said crews got the call around 2 p.m. arrived on scene within three minutes. Multiple agencies responded to the blaze.
The fire district confirmed no injuries resulted from the incident.
“As of right now we’re at a total of zero injuries for the incident,” a fire district official said.
A woman told a reporter she called 911 after seeing flames from her balcony and rushed to check on her elderly neighbor. The fire district said everyone got out safely.
Drone footage showed the roof of the affected unit charred and caved in. Cleanup crews were on scene placing caution tape around the area.
Neighbors said an air conditioning unit had been serviced in the area earlier in the day. Firefighters were seen digging near a unit, and the fire district said it believes the fire started on the outside of the building.
Captain Chris Camacho of the Boiling Springs Fire District said the investigation remains open to all possibilities.
“We always do our due diligence and investigate all potential causes equally,” Camacho said.
Camacho also described the response to the blaze.
“It was a standard apartment fire. We made an aggressive attack and it worked out well,” he said.
Cleanup efforts were underway as of Friday evening.
