CLEMSON, S.C.– Clemson Volleyball continues its road trip at Miami and Florida State beginning Oct. 9 at 7 pm against Miami. This will be the Tigers lone trip to the Sunshine State this season as they end their four game road trip.

Clemson at Miami | Friday, Oct. 9 | 7 p.m.

Miami enters the week with a 5-8 record on the year and are 3-1 in ACC play, coming off a win against NC State last weekend. Last season, Clemson lost 0-3 at home to the Hurricanes while the team was ranked #24 in the country.

Clemson at Florida State | Sunday, Oct. 11 | 1 p.m.

Florida State enters the week with an 9-6 record and are 3-1 in ACC play after two 3-0 wins against NC State and Wake Forest. Last season, Clemson won its matchup in Tallahassee with a 3-1 win, but dropped its home match against the side. The Seminoles will face Georgia Tech on Oct. 9 before the Tigers come to Tallahassee.

Season Overview

The Tigers are 6-10 after the first week of conference play, with a 0-4 record in ACC action. The Tigers will finish their four-match road swing this weekend with the two in the Sunshine State, before returning home for a four-match home stand beginning Oct. 16 at 6 pm against Boston College. The team will host Syracuse on Oct. 18 at 1 pm inside Jervey Gym. All Clemson Volleyball home matches are free admission and can be streamed on ACCNX.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney praised a veteran wide receiver following the Tigers’ 41-13 loss to Miami this past Saturday.

Despite the defeat, senior slot receiver Tyler Brown continued his bounce-back 2026 campaign against the Hurricanes, hauling in a career-high 10 receptions for 76 yards. He did have a drop, but otherwise it was a strong performance.

Swinney highlighted Brown as a big bright spot for the team this season.

“Tyler Brown has been a stud all year. I mean, he really has,” Swinney said. “He’s been a real bright spot for our team. With the things he controls, he’s had a really good season in his area.”

Brown’s 10 receptions surpassed his previous career high of nine, set in a nine-catch, 153-yard performance at Syracuse in 2023. He recorded the first 10-reception game by a Clemson player since Antonio Williams’ 10 receptions against Duke last November.

Brown’s 10th catch of the game was his 100th career reception. Over his four seasons with the Tigers, including this year, Brown has registered 940 receiving yards and four touchdowns across 37 games.

Through five games this season, Brown has collected 21 catches for 188 yards, both third on the team behind the star receiver duo of T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr.

Brown has been a reliable target, helping spark the offense as an explosive weapon and dynamic playmaker. He also scored a 34-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter of Clemson’s comeback win over North Carolina, helping to put that game away.

Hailing from Greenville, South Carolina (Greenville High School), Brown burst onto the scene in his debut 2023 season, earning freshman All-American honors after leading the Tigers with 52 receptions for 531 yards and four touchdowns.

In 2024, he suffered an ankle injury requiring tightrope surgery, limiting him to just five catches over four regular-season appearances and triggering a redshirt season. After an up-and-down 2025 season during which he caught 22 passes for 191 yards in 13 games, Brown has worked his way back into form and nearly matched last year’s production already this season, returning as a key contributor in the receiving corps.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Miami quarterback Darian Mensah’s uniform was caked with various layers of the Clemson turf, grass-stained and dirt-spattered as proof of him taking some big hits in that game last weekend. And afterward, Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal felt a need to check on him.

“How you doing?” Cristobal asked.

“We’ve got a lot to clean up,” Mensah replied.

Thing is, Mensah wasn’t talking about the uniform. And Cristobal was thrilled by that.

Miami is 5-0, is entering a bye week this weekend alone atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings at 3-0 in league play, plus is ranked No. 4 in the AP Top 25. The Hurricanes are No. 1 nationally in scoring defense (tied with North Dakota State), No. 2 nationally in scoring offense and have a quarterback in Mensah who is on pace to smash the NCAA’s completion percentage record.

But Mensah, Cristobal and anyone else wearing “The U” on game day would likely agree on this point: Miami hasn’t done anything yet. Not even a 41-13 win at Clemson — a blowout victory in a place where the home team hardly ever gets blown out — had Mensah losing sight of that. That’s why, instead of gazing at his Heisman Trophy-contending stats, Mensah was talking about things like working on ball security this week and ensuring that the Hurricanes minimize their pre-snap mistakes.

“He was upset with himself, and I think that’s a great sign of a quarterback that’s a real competitor,” Cristobal said. “He just wants to get better. Instead of looking for praise after the game, he’s looking for areas to improve upon.”

None of this should suggest the Hurricanes aren’t enjoying the moments. Mensah celebrated among teammates in a raucous locker room after the Clemson win, with some of that scene getting captured on social media — including a couple dance moves with Cristobal joining in on the fun.

It just doesn’t get in the way of the work, and that’s exactly how Cristobal wants his team to operate. There’s a cliche at Miami: “1-0” is Cristobal’s answer for everything, his shorthand for saying that winning the next game is always what matters most. It was the approach that helped carry the Hurricanes to last season’s College Football Playoff national championship game, and has the Hurricanes off to a fast start again this season.

“Man, they love winning. They love winning,” Cristobal said. “And when you work to the levels, the extent of the way that we push ourselves, push each other, the validation comes and we stay process oriented, but results validate things one way or the other. And they love that part. And they know that it’s a short window to enjoy because you’re onto the next one really, really quickly. It’s just the way it is.”

The bye comes at a good time for Miami, which is dealing with a slew of injuries — notably involving the secondary and offensive line. Florida State visits on Oct. 17 for the annual rivalry game between the programs, then a potential first-place showdown with Pitt comes the following week.

But the Hurricanes have stayed unscathed. Wide receiver Malachi Toney leads the ACC with 39 catches for 604 yards. Running backs Mark Fletcher Jr. and Javian Mallory have combined for eight touchdowns on the ground and 6.5 yards per carry. The defense has allowed four touchdowns in five games — and driving the entire engine is Mensah, who has thrown for 15 touchdowns, zero interceptions and is completing 84.2% of his passes.

Mensah was flirting with the 90% mark before the Clemson game yet remains well ahead of the FBS-level record for completion percentage of 77.4% — set by Alabama’s Mac Jones in 2020 and matched by Oregon’s Bo Nix in 2023.

“I’m not impressed with myself, to be honest,” Mensah said. “I’m really just trying to go 1-0 every week. It’s cool to be 90%, but nobody gives you a trophy for being 90%. So, it doesn’t really mean anything to me.”

CLEMSON, S.C. — The Miami Hurricanes put a major feather in their cap on Saturday, going on the road in front of a packed “Death Valley” and beating ACC rival Clemson 41-13.

The ABC primetime game put Miami in front of a national audience, and UM did not disappoint.

Here are five things we learned from the Hurricanes’ victory:

Clemson’s M.O. was to move the ball on the ground. The Tigers entered the game averaging 158.3 rushing yards per game, and they racked up 257 yards in their win over Cal last week.

Miami eliminated that arrow from Clemson’s quiver. The Tigers rushed for 55 yards on 31 carries, averaging just 1.8 yards per carry. Even if you remove negative yardage from sacks, Clemson had 90 rushing yards. Thirty-three of those yards came on the game’s final drive as Clemson was just trying to end the game.

Standout running back Gideon Davidson had just 25 yards on seven carries after rushing for 159 yards last week.

“I feel like their formation really told the story,” defensive end Damon Wilson II said. “So you had to look at the tight end, the running back — split zone, counter. They told you everything. So we just communicated and just trusted our keys.”

Miami’s dominant run defense made Clemson one-dimensional, and the Tigers could not generate enough offense through the air.

Finding non-Toney production

Hurricanes star receiver Malachi Toney had a relatively quiet day. He had five catches for 40 yards — including a crucial fourth-down catch. Toney had a touchdown wiped out by a penalty for the second consecutive game, and Clemson’s standout cornerback Ashton Hampton broke up a couple of passes headed his way.

Without the dynamic playmaker to turn to for automatic offense, the Hurricanes had to find other sources. They did. Cooper Barkate took UM’s first official play from scrimmage (a Clemson penalty started the drive) and went 61 yards to the end zone.

Miami also got strong production from its running backs. Mark Fletcher Jr. scored twice and finished with 77 yards on 16 carries. Freshman Javian Mallory had 14 carries for 63 yards. The pair of running backs combined to run over Clemson for a key nine-play drive that was made up entirely of run plays. Fletcher earned a 75.6 running grade from Pro Football Focus, and Mallory had a 68.1 grade.

Miami’s defense made Clemson quarterback Tait Reynolds’ life extremely difficult. The Hurricanes had 34 quarterback pressures, according to PFF. That resulted in six sacks and a strip-sack.

“I think we were resilient and relentless,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “I think that our matchups and our continued work at technique and fundamentals in the way we practice showed up. I think Greentree showed up out here tonight.”

Wilson led the way. The former Missouri defensive end led the team with 2.5 sacks and 11 quarterback pressures.

Miami terrorized Reynolds even without the services of defensive end Marquise Lightfoot, who was off to a strong start before leaving the game with an injury. He had two pressures and a sack before leaving the game.

Omar Thornton and Third Scroggins also had sacks, and Ahmad Moten Sr. was credited with half a sack.

Freshman offensive lineman Ben Congdon made his first career start, and he was given a tough task. Clemson has a strong defensive front, and he was put in at left guard.

Congdon performed admirably. He had a solid 71.6 run-blocking grade but a mediocre 54.7 pass-blocking grade from PFF. He was credited with allowing one quarterback pressure.

The 6-foot-8, 330-pound freshman has room to grow, but it was a decent first start.

“Tremendous amount of credit for him,” UM center Ryan Rodriguez said. “He didn’t let the atmosphere become a factor. He was even-keeled. He was poised. He played physical. He played fun. And I’m glad he’s out there making the most of his opportunity.”

After five games, the Hurricanes are beat up.

Several key players are out for the season with injuries. Others, like cornerbacks Xavier Lucas and OJ Frederique Jr., have been out for weeks. The Hurricanes had more players get hurt on Saturday. Lightfoot suffered an injury and did not return (Cristobal did not have an update on him after the game). Offensive linemen Matthew McCoy and Max Buchanan both left the game with injuries but returned later. JJ Dunnigan got banged up but returned and notched a late pick-six.

UM has this week off before facing Florida State at home on Oct. 17. The bye week could not come at a better time, as the Hurricanes need to recuperate for the second half of the season.

“It’s certainly welcome due to the fact that we are banged up. We won’t know the severity of some of these things until we get in there and see the docs and figure it all out. So that’s a bittersweet part of it, right?” Cristobal said. “But I know that group in there, they love winning and they love supporting each other, and they find a way. So they’re looking forward to getting back to Miami and getting back to work on our next opponent.”

CLEMSON, S.C. —

The city of Clemson has asked local artists to paint storm drains in an effort to raise awareness of water runoff and its connection to Lake Hartwell.

The second round of paintings has been completed, with roughly 15 local artists taking part in the initiative.

Storm drains play a vital role in the purification process and, if protected and kept clean, can prevent flooding during major rainfall or storms. Water from the sky gets caught in water basins and then flows back into Lake Hartwell. That same water is filtered for drinking purposes as well.

Ethan Barnett is the stormwater manager for the city of Clemson and told WYFF 4 that keeping storm drains clean helps protect wildlife in and around the lake, makes its recreational use more enjoyable, and can heavily impact the purification process for drinking water.

"If they do get blocked by debris, whether it's natural debris such as leaves and sticks or if it's, you know, somebody maybe putting out grass clippings or something happens, to recognize that that is a problem because it will bypass the catch basin and go to the next one and can cause flooding issues," Barnett said.

Barnett told WYFF 4 he wants the public to understand the important role that storm drains play for the city and if someone notices one is clogged or impacted in any way to know they can call the city to get it cleaned out.

This is the second time the city of Clemson has granted local artists the opportunity to paint the drains in hopes people will notice them and take care of them.

"We got together in a collaboration with the utilities department. Mainly the stormwater division, to come up with this idea to kind of help display public art, raise awareness about storm drains and water quality and runoffs for the citizens of the city of Clemson," Barnett said.

The project was done in collaboration with the City of Clemson Art Center, where local artists were able to submit their designs.

Emma Twigg is one of the selected artists who was able to take part. Her storm drain was painted blue and green, with inspiration from elements of nature.

"I wanted to really emphasize, like, nature in mine. So, I use a lot of green trees and water. Elements to kind of demonstrate the beauty of nature and taking care of it and our role in keeping it clean and beautiful for everybody to enjoy," Twigg said.

She told WYFF 4 her hope is that people who see her painting learn responsibility for keeping the environment around Clemson clean and how local artists can play a big role in bringing the community together.

"Everybody has been so kind and so sweet. People stopping by love to ask questions about it. They love to give compliments to the artists. And I know the artists love interacting with people. So, it's really been amazing to see how much everybody appreciates what we're doing for the community," Twigg said.

All of the storm drains are unique to the artist who painted them, which is what Twigg said makes the project so special, bringing the community together for the same goal.
