Cities with the most expensive homes in the Charleston, South Carolina metro area

Purchasing a home is one of the most important investments there is. More than a place to live, homeownership is an asset with the potential to tremendously rise in value. But with home prices reaching record heights, affordability plays a huge role for buyers.

Although home prices have inflated all across the U.S., there are some cities that command a higher price tag than others. Location, size, age, and condition are all contributing factors to home value.

Stacker compiled a list of cities with the most expensive homes in the Charleston, South Carolina metro area using data from Zillow. Charts show the monthly typical home value since January 2018. Data was available for 35 cities and towns.

Gresham Meggett championship teams receive rings nearly 70 years later, Oct. 3, 2025 (WCIV)

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) — During halftime of Friday night’s football game, James Island High School honored two state championship football teams, presenting surviving players and their families with rings nearly 70 years after their victories.

“It’s something beautiful for this to happen. We had a beautiful team, a hardworking team,” said Ellis Green, who played on the 1964 team. “You know, my nephew has two rings from the Raiders and every time he showed me that ring I said, ‘Man, I wish I could have had a ring.’ And now, I have my own ring, so that’s special.”

W. Gresham Meggett High School was built in the 1950s for James Island’s African American students during segregation.

The school’s football teams won back-to-back state championships in 1956 and 1964 but never received rings due to a lack of funding. On Friday, a small group of surviving players from those teams, now in their 80s and 90s, finally received their long-overdue recognition.

“It’s great. We didn’t even think that we were going to get a championship ring,” said James A. Roper III, who played on the 1964 team. “I am elated to be able to live long enough. There’s only six of us still living.”

Family members also accepted rings on behalf of players who have since passed away.

Michelle Richardson Curry received a ring for her father, Walter Richardson, who played on the 1957 team.

“This is so humbling to actually be here to accept his ring on his behalf,” she said. “Today is the 34th anniversary of his passing, so his life came full circle tonight. I thank James Island High School for presenting this award because it’s long overdue.”

Ernest Wallace, whose cousin Herman Wallace played on the 1956 team, reflected on what his cousin would have said about finally receiving a ring.

“He would probably say that they were the best ever,” Wallace said. “They overachieved. They didn’t have the equipment, they didn’t have the transportation, but somehow they pressed on and made an accomplishment coming from James Island at that time.”

Ronald Ladson, whose uncles Eddie Ladson and Willie Green played on both championship teams, said the honor was long overdue.

“I think they would be overjoyed,” he said. “During the time they won the back-to-back championships, they didn’t get the proper recognition. It would be an honor and a privilege for them.”

Former Gresham Meggett cheerleader Inez Brown Crouch helped the athletics department track down the players and their families.

Recipients said the ceremony also honored a legacy that continues to inspire.

“He would be proud of the accomplishment that they made. They actually paved the road for some of his descendants, including myself,” Wallace said. “As a matter of fact, my grandchild is a Wallace and he’s playing on the field tonight. To remember that they started somewhere and their family started somewhere, I am so proud of what the athletic department did for my family and the families of these people.”

Athletic director Jeremy Holland said the recognition helps unify the island’s history.

“I think it’s very important that we bring in all of the schools that have made this island,” Holland said. “Gresham Meggett is a good place to start. It’s important to show the community that this is one island and not just James Island.”
